So who are my Best Picture winners for 2001? They are:
Gold - Mulholland Drive
Silver - In the Mood for Love
Bronze - Werckmeister Harmonies
I know this trio would have never really been selected by the Academy. Mulholland Drive was too edgy and different, but it's omission was particularly egregious. The other two were foreign films, and to that I say the Academy needs to open their minds a bit. Recognizing a foreign film only pressures Hollywood to up it's game. And In the Mood for Love is a gorgeous, wonderful love story... nothing strenuous, but just so well done. Werckmeister is a different story. It is pure art house and will not be for everyone. In the end I found it to be incredibly moving, with one scene in particular just so simple yet jaw dropping. It's so unique and different it's hard not to vote for it. If I took out the foreign films, my 3 would have been Mulholland Drive, In the Bedroom, and Gosford Park.
Is there anyone out there who has seen Werckmeister? What are your thoughts on Mulholland?
