DURGA PUJO - MAHA ASHTOMI
I was lucky to get invited to another bari for the Sandhi pujo. It is said that Maa Durga takes the form of Kali to destroy Mahishasura's allies chondo and munda (thus her another name chamundaeshwari) on this day. The last 24minutes of Astomi and the first 24mintues of Navami is when this is said have happened.
There was something in the air that day for sure. Maybe it was my sleep deprived state of mind due to all night pandal hopping and all day Bonedi bari hopping for the previous 2 days. Maybe it was the energy of entire bengal chanting ancient mantras, lighting 108 lamps, offering themselves to her. When it comes to Kolkata during Durga Pujo especially Maha Astomi, I truly do understand what everyone says, because I too have experienced it. She is Omnipresent.
Durga meaning fort in sanskrit is considered invincible. At first I didn't understand why would they all consider to her as a mother and Bengal's daughter when she was inaccessible. This Sandhi pujo as I stood there lighting 108 lamps, chanting and performing Pushpanjali, it dawned to me that I am on the inside of that fort and not outside.
Now I get why she isn't shown in an aggressive form while killing a demon. She is reassuring. She is here for you. She is welcomed back home after her triumph over evil.
For she is Durgatinashini, which literally translates into "the one who eliminates sufferings." Now I don't have many photos from the sandhi puja, so just sharing my favourite pictures from that day.
