Comment the first word or phrase that comes to mind when you see this picture perfect Autumnal road! 🍂🍁🍂 For me: Bliss! Beautiful shot by @breaking_light_pictures
The Dark Hedges were planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century as a way, basically, to show off! They were placed to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. Two centuries later, the trees remain a magnificent sight and have become one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland. You will know them, of course, after being since in HBO's epic series Game of Thrones, as they represented King's Road.
But it's said there is another visitor to these hedges....The Grey Lady is said to haunt the spooky road surrounded by ancient beech trees. Legend has it that she glides along the road and vanishes as she passes the last beech tree. Some believe the ghost to be that of a maid from a nearby house who died in mysterious circumstances hundreds of years ago. Others think she is a lost spirit from an abandoned graveyard, in the fields nearby. A perfect place to visit around Halloween!
